When I was just a young boy I can tenderly hark back to sitting on an antique barber chair at the community barber shop and watching my father receiving a haircut and shave. It is not anything like what it is these days. There was an skill to it. The barber really appreciated what he was doing and it was apparent that my father loved it. Not only that, but the barber shop was where gentlemen could hang out amongst themselves.

The men would principally argue about baseball or local politics, though the subject of women would come up often. It was a time to be at ease and get to know each of us a bit better. Today, when you get a haircut the chatting is kept to a minimum and you commonly attempt to get out as soon as possible.

As I walk by the local barber shop and see the sign indicating barber chairs for sale, I question why this custom has mostly vanished from our customs.
