A Woman Displays Symptoms Of Depression And Alcoholism And Schedules An Appointment To See Her Healthcare Professional

Cindy was a thirty-two-year-old accounts payable manager who knew that she had some drinking issues. For instance, within the past month she has experienced the need to have several drinks before going to work, six weeks ago she failed to pass a random urine alcohol test at her place of employment, two weeks ago she got arrested by the state highway patrol for "driving under the influence", and lastly, for almost four months she has begun to fail to remember what she says and does when she drinks with her pals.

Not unlike multitudes of other drinkers, Cindy's alcohol involvement began at a "snail's pace" and stayed at this tempo for quite some time due to the fact that from time to time she engaged in sporadic social drinking. In fact, for around six months, every time she went out with her friends to drink, she made sure to drink in a responsible manner. Something about her pattern of drinking, however, seemed to thoroughly change when she divorced her husband.

Cindy got especially depressed about the breakup with her husband, and as a way to abstain from obsessing about her disheartening emotions she decided to start palling around more routinely with some of her buddies who love to party. It didn't take very long, nevertheless, before her drinking escalated significantly the more often she went to and drank at family get-togethers, dinner dates, sporting events, happy hours, and private parties with her pals.

To put it briefly, she was drinking and having fun just like everyone else in her group of pals without paying much attention to the alcohol short term effects and particularly about the alcohol long term effects she has been exhibiting. Yet in the recesses of her mind she knew about the negative alcohol effects on the body and on the mind and that she more likely than not needed alcohol rehabilitation but kept away from the thought as much as humanly possible.

One afternoon during her annual physical exam, her physician asked her if she drank alcohol. Not wanting to tell falsehoods to her doctor, Cindy admitted that she commonly drinks more than she should. In actual fact, she said that she routinely drinks in an excessive manner. Then Cindy told her physician about her depression. More to the point, she mentioned that ruined relationships commonly elicited a dismal cycle of events typified by increased drinking which further led to more disheartening feelings that, in turn, resulted in more drinking. And this is exactly what took place when she and her husband got divorced five months ago.

Cindy's healthcare practitioner then told her the following: "I am not trying to make a sudden diagnosis, but with your medical condition we may be dealing with two separate issues. Consequently, I think we should schedule an appointment for you to get an alcohol dependency and alcohol abuse evaluation from my partner, Dr. Gardner, who is a drug and alcohol addiction specialist."

"Whether your drinking condition is more related to alcohol abuse or alcoholism is unclear at this time, but I believe that further evaluation is needed. Then I think we need to make an appointment for you to get a psychological evaluation from another one of my partners, Dr. Berger, who is a psychologist."

"I need to get a better understanding about your melancholy and see how much your depression and drinking are interrelated." Cindy showed her approval of her healthcare practitioner's "game plan" and thanked him for his help.
